REVIEWS FROM PAST STUDENTS:

"A friend recommended that I take Lindsey's class for several reasons, but the one that stood out to me was "she's SUCH a good teacher." The point she made was obvious upon entering the learning space. She met us each where we are, encouraged our own voices, gave constructive pointed and honest criticism (not just cheerleading Instagram style) and supported our project ideas and challenges to see how we might make it work. I loved the art history angle and her desire for us to learn about artists and analyze their work. She challenged us to seek inspiration in others' work and utilize techniques that might open up our projects and for me, it sounds boring but it was really challenging, most importantly she showed me how to make a plan, keep myself on track, challenge my notion of what should be done, and open me to the idea that ideas and projects ebb and flow. Having a creative block is part of being an artist and part of the creation process...and "done is better than perfect" I loved that. It was so encouraging to hear that. Also so eye-opening to see how slow and methodical the process is for other artists. Naive, yes, but I had no idea that of thousands of images a documentary photographer would select as few as 8-10 images to tell the story. It changed my perception of story telling...instead of getting every little detail we look for images that express an idea that help us transition to another portrait or story telling image, etc. So interesting to see through a new lens. She also doesn't subscribe to a "this is exactly how it must be done" formula. I loved how she opened up the process and rigidity to knock down my preconceived notions of what documentary photography has to be. As a result of this class, I'm on track to continue working on a personal project that was started in The Family Historian class and I'd all but given up on."

“It is always so incredible to me that Illuminate classes make you feel so connected even though they take place on line. Lindsey's class did that and so much more. It was simply fabulous. I appreciated her guidance, her input and her manner and feel like I learned a ton. My only dissatisfaction is that it had to come to an end! I would actually take this class twice!”

“I've been interested in documentary photography for a while, but had no idea where to start.  Thanks to Lindsey I've got the perfect toolbox and game plan for my first project.  I loved the class and Lindsey was knowledgeable, talented, kind, and gave excellent feedback.  What more could I ask for?!

“I just wanted to say Lindsey is an amazing teacher! In 3 weeks I've learnt so much and I really loved delving deeper into composition, light, storytelling techniques. I'm actually feeling a bit lost without her. Her lesson plans were brilliant and the videos really helped. Lindsey took time editing our assignments and went out of her way for those who handed in late - she was so kind and thoughtful and knew a lot of us had small children and life got in the way, she never gave a cold shoulder because someone handed their assignment in late and encouraged for us to just do it. With our critique videos Lindsey was excellent with the critique in such a positive way that it never deflated you - it gave you more confidence. I loved how she took the time which each one of us and helped with editing. As someone who is self taught and doesn’t have a business, this I found an amazing bonus! I often sit here on my own thinking should I do this? Does this look ok? Only I have no one to ask so with each assignment Lindsey would show how she tweaked it just a little and why. It has open my eyes up so much. Just yesterday I took some photos of my daughter and whilst editing I remembered her ideas on what she does and I went about my way with my new eye. We had such a great class and I was so blessed to have had Lindsey as my teacher.”

"Point of View: Documentary Photography was an amazing opportunity to learn from Lindsey Bergstrom alongside many other talented photographers. The course challenged me to think more deeply and reflectively about my work and the direction that I am heading with my photography. References to accomplished documentary photographers helped me learn and experience the vast opportunities to tell stories through photos. I was also inspired to think about my work in projects - stories that I want to tell. I leaned strategies and techniques to help tell a story through meaningful photographs, how one might go about choosing a project, how to connect the project to real people and how to select the images that stand out as crucial to telling the story. I am still learning - but have already returned to the class notes to help me as I think about a project that I am currently working on. It has helped me confirm the importance of a personal connection to my photographs and subject. Thanks, Lindsey!"

"If you want to learn documentary photography then this class is for you. Lindsey is honest, raw and will really make your mind explore what documentary work really is and how you will perceive it in your own creative way. I am so pleased I took this class. What you will learn here will not be forgotten. You will use it, crave it and wish you could take her class again."

"This class is everything you think it might be...and more. Once you have completed it you will have a better love and understanding of the art of Documentary Storytelling, Lindsey Bergstrom is a great guide, teacher and motivator. A class you should definitely treat yourself to if you have ever had a story you are itching to tell!"

"Lindsey's approach to documentary photography and her incredible knowledge on the subject added depth to my thinking about photography as much as shadow adds depth to a portrait. This class challenged me personally and professionally, pushing me way out of my comfort zone and into an approach to image-making that has changed everything I do when I pick up my camera. Lindsey is kind but unrelenting, honest and exacting, and her criticism changed the way I think about beauty and meaning. I want to take the class again!"

"This workshop helped me to develop as an artist. It has helped me to learn more about photography and has also really helped me to look beyond the most likely photographic capture and strive for something more. I highly recommend this class and know I will be referencing this workshop frequently."

"It was an eye opener, game changer."

"I loved working with Lindsey. She really helped me see my vision and get my story across in a portrait. She helped me become a story teller rather than just a portrait taker."

"Lindsey, I only wish I had the time to devote much more time to this workshop. You were an amazing teacher, and so so inspirational. I know that in time, when I find that perfect project, I will have the materials and be able to confidently move forward with the story I want to tell. Thank you for being real, honest, and so informative on this subject. You shoot from the heart, and I love your passion. Thank you!!!"
